I based this painting on a photo from Discover Magazine, just because I thought it looked interesting. The purple and tan color choices came from the original reference photo. The painting started out as just the angler fish, I hadn't decided yet what the angler would be luring in. When I added in the sea floor, the black water above it reminded me of outer space so the astronaut was a natural addition. By that point of course the painting needed some stars and a ringed planet. It might be Saturn, but it does't have to be. I didn't actually think of the astronaut as Major Tom until the painting was done.
Many of my paintings are dark enough that some people find them disturbing. This painting is a rare example where one of my own paintings actually creeps me out. Just a little.
