I had previously painted a sugar skull cat, and our dogs felt a little left out. So to give the dogs a voice I painted this sugar skull dog based on one of our own. However his black / blue color and floppy ears make him look just as familiar to many other people. The name is a reference to Hogan the Grim because the dog's face looks so serious.
The pink flowers and swirly designs add a bit of delicacy and decorum to the portrait, which the original subject of this painting unfortunately didn't quite have in real life.
